Tamil Nadu women’s team had clinched the 2017–18 Senior Women’s National Football Championship
The 2017–18 Senior Women’s National Football Championship is the 23rd edition of the Senior Women’s National Football Championship, the premier competition in India for women’s teams representing regional and state football associations.
The tournament is being hosted in Barabati Stadium, Cuttack, Odisha and from 28 January to 14 February 2018.
When the number of teams is known, those are divided into eight groups with the equal number of teams. The preliminary qualifying league will be played on a single leg league basis. The eight winners move on to the two quarterfinal leagues. That is played as a single leg league, with the best two teams in each group qualifying for the semi-finals stage. From there on it is a knock out format with single leg matches.
Tamil Nadu team is placed in Group-C along with Goa, Sikkim, Uttarakhand.
In the opening game on 28th Jan 2018 Tamil Nadu played against Sikkim beaten them with a goal of 5-0, and in their second game TN had met Goa on 1st of Feb 2018, this is the only match that TN women’s have drawn the game as 1-1. On 3rd Feb 2018, TN Women’s had played their last group stage match where they clinched the victory as 11-1.
In Quater-Final TN women’s had played against the host state Odisha on 9th Feb 2018, where they had gained the victory with 2-0.
In Semi-Final TN women’s had thrashed West Bengal team as 4-1. In the 23rd minute TN got the lead as Sumitra Marandi pass had been gone into the box, thus the own goal had changed the complexion of the game. Indumathi utilised the acres of space of available to her to double the lead in the 41st as the teams headed into the break with Bengal down by two goals. West Bengal tried to regain composure and finally pulled one back through Barnali Karar in the 60th minute. The goal seemed to revive the Bengal team as they drove forward in search of goals but Tamil Nadu hit back on the counter to sink all their hopes. Indhrani finding the net in the 88th minute to seal the affair.
In Final TN Women’s had to clash with Manipur women’s to lift the trophy, Manipur is the defending champions as well as 18 times Senior Women’s National Football Championship winners.
Indumathi opened TN women’s team account in the 3rd minute as the early lead made them anticipate the whole game, while Indrani had made this as 2-0 in the 40th minute. Manipur also had played hard and Ratanbala has scored a goal in the 57th minute.
Indumathi named as the Player of the Match as well as Player of the tournament.
