Let’s take a look at the five talking points of this big game.
●SAMBA MAGIC AT KANTEERAVA:
It was Brazilian boys who stood tall for Chennaiyin FC to clinch their second trophy. Mailson Alves scored two goals from a corner kick which was taken by the Dutch man, Nelson which helped Chennaiyin FC to finish the first half with a score line 1-2. Not only Mailson but Fans favorite Raphael Augusto scored a wonderful goal in front of the box to make it 1-3 at the second half. Raphael also impressed with his skills and ball control as usual. Mailson was also adjudged Hero of the match again. Previously, he won the same against FC Goa in the second leg of Semi-Finals which was played in Chennai earlier this week. Mailson was also involved with 14 clearances in this big encounter helping at the back and front as well.
●UDANTA’S PACE WAS’NT ENOUGH TO BEAT CHENNAIYIN DEFENCE:
Udanta Singh was as usual threat to defenders with his killing pace at the wing and with his crosses inside the box. He was marked by Jerry in the first half and it was a good battle between the two lads. However, Jerry could not stop Udanta’s cross to Sunil Chhetri to the right ended in the goal to Bengaluru FC. Udanta’s pace was continuously troubling Chennaiyin defense and left back was not able to cope up with the pace of Udanta Singh. The young lad made numerous mistakes when Udanta came for counters with his pace. However, Udanta was controlled in the second half well with the brilliant technique skills from Jerry.

●DEFENSIVE FOOTBALL WON OVER ATTACKING FOOTBALL:
John Gregory and his men were victorious with his defensive football. Roca went on with an attacking formation to make an immediate impact over the game but Gregory’s patient defensive football won the game. As Alex Ferguson’s saying,” Attack wins you matches, Defense wins you titles”, was followed by John and won the title on his debut season in India. He is also the first English Coach to win the Hero Indian Super League title. Roca suffered a blow in the first half which made him to force a substitution by replacing Dimas with Victor, who made his debut in the Indian Super League. Bengaluru FC came close on scoring but they were denied by the wall of Chennaiyin FC. Miku’s late goal went in vain as Marina Machans were able to withstand.
●SET-PIECES MADE THE DIFFERENCE:
We have seen Bengaluru FC scoring many goals from the set-pieces but today it was Chennaiyin FC who scored two goals from set-piece which was well assisted from the dead ball specialist, Gregory Nelson. Dutch man gave two brilliant deliveries inside the box which was towered and well converted by Brazilian Defender, Mailson. Dimas who has helped them with set-pieces in the league was replaced due to injury at the start of second half. Jhonson, Juanan and Paartalu were also trying to score with their strong physicality but defenders proved enough to keep them away. Sereno made sure that the defenders were marked during the set-pieces. Spanish Defender, Inigo Calderon made some crucial clearances inside the box to retain the lead that Chennai had. Finally, it was Chennai who were successful with their set-pieces in this big encounter.
●HEROICS FROM CHENNAI PLAYERS:
Chennaiyin FC is known for their team performance and they have various goal scorers who stand up when their team requires. Today, Chennaiyin FC players displayed a heroic performance especially defenders who kept Sunil and Miku quiet for the entire game who found tough to score past these defenders. Chennaiyin FC will be remembered for this victory since not many sides have been successful in Kanteerava Stadium. Raphael scored a wonderful goal past India’s shot-stopper Sandhu which was well assisted by Jeje. Chennaiyin FC were not pressing like Bengaluru FC but made use of their chances wisely. It was a dream come true moment for coach Gregory was he won his first trophy in India on his debut season beating a side which finished the league table on top. Chennaiyin FC deserved the title for their spirit and lifted the trophy for the second time.
