East Bengal snatched a hard fought 1-0 victory over weakened FC Goa in the 1st semi final of Hero Super Cup on Monday in Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneshwar. East Bengal will now play Mohun Bagan or Bengaluru FC in the final. Here we discuss about the five major talking points of the match.
● Battle of Master & Disciple :
It was an exciting battle of Master & Disciple in the semis. Derick Pereira, the NFL winning coach was the disciple of veteran Subhash Bhowmick. Derick has played for Bhowmick in the national team, where as East Bengal coach Khalid Jamil has been managed by Derick Pereira when he was in Mahindra United.
● Goa surprised the Red and Gold :
Before the semi final, there were only 14 members available for FC Goa. Derick Pereira had a problem to select his 1st XI for the match which he had expressed in the press conference earlier. FC Goa were forced to inject few fresh and young players in their semi final line up. But these younger faces actually shocked complacent East Bengal in the match. Mohammad Ali, the stopper who had got chance in absence of Bruno Pinheiro, actually nullified almost every attacks of East Bengal. Liston Colaco, another Goan lad had an excellent game. Manvir Singh, who scored against Jamshedpur FC played well. He actually got a golden chance in the dying moments which he failed to convert.
● Bedia-Coro the deadly combo :
Spaniards Edu Bedia and Ferran Corrominas were only two foreign players who were available for the semis for Goa. The duo affected East Bengal well throughout the match. Despite of difficulties, Edu Bedia was successful in creating golden chances which were actually been wasted by the Goa forwards. Coro was spectacular in fooling the shaky defence of the I-League side. He almost scored in the dying moments of the 1st half which was cleared by Chullova near goal line. In the 2nd half, Coro’s freekick beat Ubaid and hit the crossbar. Goa’s hope ended when Edu Bedia was given Red card in the later half for the nasty tackle on Ansumana Kromah.
● Dudu saved the day :
There were much criticisms on Dudu’s performance in the Super Cup. He failed to convert easy chances in the 1st match. In the quarter final match against Aizawl FC, he torn his shirt when he was substituted, which actually gave birth to controversies. He alleged that there were racial comments from the supporters in the quarter final. In this match, he again failed to convert easy chances. But in the 2nd half, he finally save the day for East Bengal, when he converted the poor cross of Katsumi into goal. Goalkeeper Kattimani had no chance to save that.
● Kattimani the Superman :
Laxmikant Kattimani had a mixed season. A question mark was their in his performance through out the season. He conceded some poor goals in several matches which costed eventually. For his poor performances, Sergio Lobera, the former FC Goa coach, compelled to replace him with Pawan Kumar in the later half of ISL. In the the semi final, Kattimani saved Goa on many occasions. He saved shots of Katsumi & Dudu which could’ve been ended the match in the 1st half.
