‘Le Blues’ are considered as one of the favourites to win the upcoming World Cup in Russia. But some surprise exclusions were made by Didier Deschamps in the preliminary 23 men squad of France few days back. Anthony Martial, Alexandre Lacazette and Dimitri Payet were ignored to go to Russia. Squad Analysis :
The squad of France is looking very much balanced in all aspects. Hugo Lloris is considered as one of the top Goalkeepers of the World right now. The defence of the French National side are seeming to be little weakened due to the injury of Laurent Koscielny. But the young and experienced pair of Samuel Umtiti and Raphael Varane will play in the central defence.
Lucas Hernandez and Djibril Sidibe will play as two side backs for the French national team. N’Golo Kante, Paul Pogba and Blaise Matuidi will be there in the Midfield of France and it is looking quite strong. Antoine Griezmann, Olivier Giroud and Kylian Mbappe will be playing at the upfront and they will cause problems in the opponent’s defense any day. The backup options of France are also looking better than most of the team’s first eleven in the World Cup.

● Past Record In World Cup :
France had won the World Cup once in 1998 and were the runner’s up in 2006. They had finished at the third place twice and the fourth place once. In the last two World Cups their record is really poor as they finished their campaign in the Group Stage in 2010 and they were out from the quarter final stage in the previous World Cup.
Recent Form :
The French national team have faced only one defeat against Colombia in the last 5 matches they played. Otherwise they have finished at the top of the Group table in the World Cup qualifiers with 23 points from 10 matches and booked their place in the World Cup directly.
Group Hurdles :
The group will be very much easy for this French national team. Only Christian Eriksen’s Denmark can cause some problems to France.
- 16th June – France vs Australia
- 21st June – France vs Peru
- 26th June – France vs Denmark
Manager’s Quote :
Several questions were raised over the squad selection of Didier Deschamps and the exclusion of Anthony Martial and Alexandre Lacazette was quite surprising. Didier Deschamps gave answer to all the questions :
•”They were good [in November’s 2-2 friendly draw] against Germany, but the whole team were,” Deschamps said. “And it’s still a friendly match, even if it’s Germany.
•”I have had these two players in several situations, as starters and substitutes.”
•”I have a complete analysis based on what they have shown me and the role they could have in the squad at the World Cup.”
•“Alex was injured in March, Anthony was back.”
•”There is especially strong competition. I consider Giroud, Griezmann, Mbappe and Fekir as axial strikers, even if they can play in other positions.
•”Just watch Mbappe’s performance in this position against Russia recently. I think there is no point in accumulating multiple players in the same position.”
Writer’s Take :
The squad of France is looking very much balanced. They will easily top the Group C in the upcoming World Cup. They have surely the potential to go to the Semifinal of the tournament with this squad. After that, it will completely depend on Didier Deschamps’ tactical game and the form of the players at that time of the tournament.
