The World Cup has been getting highly exuberant and demanding as the games are progressing. On the 25th of June we witnessed intense actions with dilemmatic situations and prolific gameplay. We witnessed Cristiano Ronaldo’s side struggle for a point against the Asian giants Iran.
After going infront through Ricardo Quaresma’s amazing strike, Portugal also saw Cristiano Ronaldo missing on a penalty and Iran capitalizing on another one later on. But, the point failed to be enough for the Asian side, who were gutted to go out of the tournament. In a game filled with utmost passion and emotions, let us take a look at the talking points :
1. CHANGES IN STARTING XI :
The Portugal coach must have been very proud of the way his side has performed so far in this competition. The way they snatched a point from Spain on the dying seconds and to manage a win against Morocco gave them perfect hopes of progression. However his decision of tweaking things worked out really well as he opted to start with Ricardo Quaresma in place of Bernando Silva, Adrien Silva in place of half fit Joao Moutinho and Andre Silva in place of a rather underwhelming Goncalo Guedes, what happened later, remains as memories.
2. RICARDO QUARESMA’S TRIVELA DICTATES SUPERIORITY FOR THE PORTUGESE MEN:
The trademark outside of the right foot shot attempted by Quaresma converts into a goal which has been recorded as one of the finest goal scoring attempts in the history books of World Cup 2018. The 34 year Besiktas winger famous for his trademark Rabonas and Trivelas delivered on the right place at right time to give his nation a major boost to qualify for the next round. Quaresma has always been speculated to be extremely talented but lacked consistency. But it was his day as he allured the spectators as he menaced his tricky movements and decided to take a stand and turn back the clock with a wonderful strike.
3. THE TWO GREATEST OF THE GAME MISS OUT ON SPOT KICKS :
The greatest players of all time, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo bith miss out on penalties in this World Cup which later proved out to be game changing spot kicks for both of their nations. Not to forget, both of them were thoroughly zonal marked by their opponents which put high pressure on both of them which might be a reason for the fumble. A dilemmatic situation for the match official leading to a VAR penalty review which turned out to be positive. The leader stepped up to take his nation forward but he fell inveigle to the hands of Beiranvand, a person who went homeless to play football, as he stood against the greatest.
4. IRAN SHOWING MASSIVE CHANGES UNDER CARLOS QUEIROZ AS THEY HAD A VERY SUCCESSFUL WORLD CUP OUTING :
Carlos Queiroz, the Iranian national team manager had taken charge of the side surprisingly on 2011. Words fall short as we see an extraordinary Iran team in the World Cup with the commendable efforts coming from the team and the gaffer. As they attained only a point in Brazil 2014, we are surprised to see the side snatching 4 points from a very tough Group B consisting teams like Spain, Portugal and Morocco. Queiroz has definitely unearthed many talents over the years and made Iran a more compact team and this allowed them to have much bigger outing amongst the Asians.
5. “TEAM MELLI“ MAKE ASIANS REALLY PROUD :
Out of the five teams who qualified from Asia, Iran weren’t expected to beat the odds against such a tough group . They not only beat the odds, they also beat the Moroccans in the opening clash. Their defence was exceptionally sturdy against Spain and it was an unfortunate goal which saw the Spanish men take away 3 points before they held Portugal for a draw. Coming so close to qualification and topping the group, things would have surely been different if Amiri’s miss from the 6 yards with just the goalkeeper to beat has been lashed in into the side netting. That is how close they were from not just knocking out Portugal but to top Group B Iran will be left gutted at their inability to make difference when it mattered the most But, they have not only made their nation proud but all of the Asia proud, as they went on toe to toe with the best in the game. We are hopeful to see more from a nation who has started to make a name for themselves in World Football.
