unnamed 1 3 - Should Ravindra Jadeja Be In XI In Next Test Inplace Of Ashwin Or Pandya: An Analysis

Few days ago after the Lord’s rout, places in Indian test team were insecure to the extent that even vice captain of the team was on the brink of getting an outser. There was complete mayhem about players, coach and team management as failure period was getting prolonged. It was questions galore especially for batsmanship and fielding. Team was looking out of sorts as available options were either newbies or already dropped ones.

Forge ahead few days, leaving behind all odds India registered a complete domination over their opponents to hand them a 203 runs defeat. Every player of the team contributed for the cause, openers produced good start in both innings, middle order was robust, fielders showed great catching, everything looks settled, there are applause around. But, is this the best combination India can have or are there somethings this victory hiding?

Ravindra Jadeja, one of India’s heores in dominating visitors at home is warming bench since south Africa tour in 2018. Though he doesn’t possesses the numbers in his favour against top overseas nations in their backyard but those numbers are 4 years old as India didn’t visit these countries in between 2014-18 and Jadeja as a player has come a long way in this period.

Though the victorious eleven of Trent Bridge is looking solid but accommodating Jadeja there can make it better. Let’s see how:-

1. Left Arm Spinner :

It is the boon in itself. Great batsmen in the past have been struggling against left arm spinners. Current indian bowling attack is devoid of left arm bowler, adding Jadeja there will bring a keen variety in the bowling attack.

2. No Hosatge To Assisting Surfaces :

Jadeja is someone who doesn’t resort to turn of the ball, he is someone who manoeuvres with line and length assisted by mixing pace. It is a proven fact with Jadeja has faded far better than premier spinner Ashwin on comparitvely non friendly surfaces in India. Having him in the eleven will keep indian bowling sharp even when Pacers would not be in charge.

3. Great Athlete On Field :

Fielding was up to the mark at Trent Bridge but as a general perception India’s fielding has been poor especially in overseas in terms of slip catching and has been causing India lagging behind a on crucial junctures. Jadeja is arguably the best fielder India have, his presence on the field will certainly boost fielding efforts.

4. Aggressive Batsman Down The Order :

While Ashwin or Hardik are playing as bowling allrounders as they have been batting at no 6 ahead of one batsman, Jadeja will come as a complete allrounder whose batting effort would be quickfire cameo in the end. Lord’s 2014 has been a testimony of this. In the recent past too he has been playing such knocks to finish India’s innings on a high.

As per current scenario Jadeja can come for Ashwin or Hardik. With Ashwin looks more credible batsman and India is already playing with three seamers, it is not like that Hardik is essential for them. If there is help for pacers then three genuine pacers are capable enough to avail of that. Playing Ashwin as batting allrounder and Jadeja as spinner provides India the opportunity to apply conditions friendly attack as well as to have both premier spinners bowing in tandem when conditions required.
