Sunday’s derby is going to be a battle of tactics between the old veteran Subhash Bhowmick and his disciple Sankarlal Chakraborty. The Mariners’ gaffer will be looking forward to apply his wits and outshine the Red and Gold’s Technical Director, under whom Chakraborty started his own coaching career.
The difference in ideas is clearly visible on the ground. While East Bengal prefers to build up slowly but steadily from the back, Mohun Bagan prefers playing long balls and using the flanks. Bhowmick’s experience adds great strength to East Bengal’s sudden change of formations during a game. Bagan’s foreign attacking force has made them a very strong side to deal with. East Bengal will have to look after their defence first and then concentrate on breaking their arch rivals’. On the other hand, the addition of the Costa Rican defender will boost the confidence of the Red and Gold brigade.
There might be no change in formation, but a few changes in players for the first team.

Probable Team Line-Up for East Bengal :

○ Formation- 4-5-1 :

Goalkeeper- Rakshit Dagar

Side Backs- Lalram Chullova Pautu and Samad Ali Mallick

Centre Backs- Kingshuk Debnath and Jhonny Acosta

Defensive Midfielder- Kamalpreet Singh
Wings- Laldanmawia Ralte and Brandon Vanlalremdika
Central Midfielders- Mahmoud Al Amna and Kassim Aidara
Striker- Joby Justin

Author’s Prediction :

East Bengal is better of the two sides on paper before going into the game. However, the derby is a whole lot different than all other games in the State League or even the National League. It’s not just the quality that matters, but also the experience and determination of the players in these kinds of matches.

East Bengal have scored 14 times playing with a single striker while Bagan have scored 16 times with a foreign duo upfront. The Red and Golds conceded only once playing with a Indian defensive duo while the Green and Maroons conceded three times even after having the service of the Nigerian wall Eze Kingsley. East Bengal will also have the service of their newly signed marquee player Jhonny Acosta in defence. So, according to me East Bengal have the edge here.

Taking into consideration all the facts, I predict a 2-0 win for the Red and Golds.
