It was Bengaluru FC, who grabbed all three points in the very first encounter of the season with Miku’s late goal in the first half. “Not everything went wrong for us,” said John Gregory in the post-match conference.
Chennaiyin FC’s head coach was quick to praise his Brazilian midfielder, Raphael Augusto, who had a good game overall. John added that, “Augusto was outstanding. At times he was kicked-on, certainly man marked and never went missing throughout the game. He has made a massive improvement from last season and started off fantastically well.”
When Gregory was asked about what went wrong for Chennaiyin FC in this game, he replied, “We were not under pressure and to be honest we were slaggy at times in the game. Miku was the last man for them to go to and he just kept his head down, smashed it, which separated us.” He also added that, “We should have been in the lead as we got lot of opportunities for the first twenty five minutes as they didn’t threaten our goal much.”
The former Aston Villa Manager also said that his boys can come back stronger next week. “We had the same start as last season. Now, we need to relax, sit down and focus on what went wrong for us this game,” added John Gregory.
When asked about Jeje’s performance in the game, Gregory said, “Jeje was seen isolated that I really need to address. The way Eric stood centre of the back four was similar how we play Dhanpal Ganesh, which made tough for the boys as Augusto had to go deeper to collect the ball.” He also added that, “Carlos made little bit easy for Jeje, but didn’t create many chances as expected.”
Apart from the loss, Chennaiyin FC had lot of positives from the game to be mentioned. “There is lot of positives to be noted from this game. I will always tell my boys to keep going, as we seen today Bengaluru FC were happy to sit back after that goal and we could have made use of that situation as well. Isaac was new and had a good game with German in the midfield,” said Gregory.
When asked about the final substitution, Gregory said that, “It was just the foreigner rule, obviously we have to take one foreigner out and it was Mailson. We thought it was good move and to move Calderon.” He also added that, “We need positives from our foreign players. Salom was expected to see a lot from the game but, it’s always tough to come on as a substitute and perform.”
