Mumbai City FC registered it’s first win of the season with a 2-0 victory over FC Pune City yesterday to achieve the bragging rights in the Maharashtra derby, at the Mumbai Football arena.
Modou Sougou- The Discernible Difference Maker :
Mumbai’s front-man, Modou Sougou was the difference between the two teams with his active contribution in both the goals, to drive the home team towards its first win of the campaign.
The Senegalese striker’s brilliant positional play made him bag the first goal, courtesy to a neat finish, from a deflected Machado cross.
Then he latched on to a crisp pass from Arnold Issoko but was fouled by a reckless tackle by Pune’s Lalchhuanmawia Fanai inside the penalty box. Rafael Bastos smashed the penalty down the middle to march the home side ahead to a two-goal advantage.
Sougou was deservingly awarded the ‘Limitless Player of the match’ for his effort.
Arnold Issoko-The Livewire :
Mumbai City’s Arnold Issoko was a constant menace for the Pune City defence with numerous dribbles down the right wing and rigorous tackles while falling back in defence.
He made a terrific run to anticipate Machado’s cross, which fortunately fell to Sogou as he put the team on lead. His crucial pass created the penalty chance and thus the second goal.
He cruised past the Pune City’s Goalkeeper Vishal Kaith, only to be tackled by Sarthak Golui, winning the second penalty for the home team.
Paulo Machado- Captain Fantastic :
Paulo Machado was named the captain for the match on which the Mumbai City manager, Jorge Costa said, “In my team, there are many leaders and Machado is one of them. The last match my captain was different and it can be different the next match as well because my team has many leaders.”
Machado drove the home team by controlling the midfield and dribbles down the middle. Hitting the post twice and inch-perfect through balls was the theme set by Machado to guide the home team towards the victory.
Paulo Machado’s impact was rewarded with him being named the man of the match.
Lucian Goian and Subhasish Bose- The Rock-solid partnership :
Goian and Bose were rock solid at the back helping the Islanders in keeping a clean sheet, boosting Jorge Costa’s defensive prominence.
Jorge Costa said, “The partnership of the two centre-backs is extremely essential, be it Goian and Bose or any other such pair, they should understand each other. Today they were better than the last games as they understand each other more.”
In the two matches that Goian played this year, he’s made 13 successful tackles, won 11 aerial duels and also has the most number of clearances, more than any of his accomplices.
Mumbai City FC Defies The Statistics :
After the 5-0 thrashing in the inaugural ISL edition, Mumbai City FC had turned cold at home against its neighbours. It had only won two matches before yesterday. On the other hand, FC Pune City had won five matches while just one match ended in a draw.
This win was undoubtedly essential for Mumbai to close down the Pune’s derby day dominance over the past few seasons and also to set the tone for the current campaign.
