ATK got their first victory at home turf as they defeated the defending champions Chennaiyin FC with 2-1 on the score sheet. Chennaiyin however faced their fourth defeat of the season as ATK climbed up to the fourth spot of the table. It was compact defense and sharp shooting from ATK that lead them to taste the first triumph at home.
Worst defensive start for Chennaiyin FC :
The match saw the defending champions conceding goals as early as two minute in the first half, as Gerson Viera headed back a goal kick rightly to Kalu Uche and the Nigerian did no mistake to turn it into goal having seen none of the opponent central backs nearby. It turned just the beginning as ATK got there first kick just beside the penalty box when Komal Thatal was brought down by Raphael Augusto with a reckless tackle. Lanzarote took brilliant free kick that was finely headed to the far corner of the net by Jhon Jhonson.
Chennaiyin made a good come back in the second quarter of the game through a very good header by Salom as Francis put in a good cross. But from the third quarter till the last whistle of the game it was CFCs defence that faced numerous threats. It turned to be a heap of disorganization and silly mistakes for the Marina Machans defence. Karanjit turned grace for them as he saved a lot of sure shots from the flying tigers.
Manuel Lanzarote- the man with quality on ball :
Lanza showed his first stint when ATK won their first free kick just beside the penalty box as Komal Thatal was brought down through a reckless tackle by Raphael Augusto. Lanza took a fabulous free kick at the 13’ that was finely headed to the far corner of the net by the English man Johnson. ATK thereafter assumed control of the match from the third quarter as Lanza continued to create threats with Uche and Thatal by his side. He made a lot of set piece deliveries that was threading through the Chennaiyin defence dangerously. One of these efforts saw Everton Santos send a header just over the bar. The captain was later awarded the Hero of the match award.
“Ricky-Gerson-Johnson-Khonjee”- evolving to be the wall of ATK defence :
From the first match Gerson and Johnson was showing a good rapport they have been now joined by Ricky who had a very impressive stint for the last three matches and Khonje who is doing well to dispose the ball. These four men are definitely turning to be the most valuable assets for the team as they are turning better every match. Gerson Viera and John Johnson was the reason that refrained Chennaiyin to gain their equalizer.
Jerry Lalrinzuala the man with hope for Chennaiyin FC :
Though his team lacked terribly in defense but this man created a lot of hope as was the man who kept ATK left flank very busy. He along with Thoi Singh was creating a lot of chances but Salom missed them miserably. Jerry was the perfect man to deal with Komal as he suppressed him well although the match leaving very little chances for the opponents.
ATK should work more with it’s strikers :
Kalu Uche turned to be the goal machine as he performed well after returning from a calf injury. He was continuously pressing the game from the second half, created some chances with Komal. He missed his brace when Jayesh Rane dribbled and provided a good ball to him just near the post but his delicate chip hit the crossbar. On the other hand Balwant seemed to be a bit low in pace compared to the other strikers that definitely paid ATK as they missed to create some fruitful situations through this man. ATK has there next match at home against Bengaluru and the gaffer should definitely resolve this issues as soon as possible to create more scoring chances for his team.
