Laldanmawia and Jobby magic helped East Bengal to prevail over arch rival Mohun Bagan in the “Battle of Survival”. East Bengal defeated Mohun Bagan nearly after long 33 months.
We have churned out the major talking points from the game.
Indian Brigade shined :
Derby always gives birth to the stars of future. Last derby of CFL witnessed the rise of Pintu Mahata. This derby marked the rise of Laldanmawia Ralte. The pocket size power house Mizo boy already bagged 4 goals in the derby so far. This time he played a vital role & scored twice for the team & assisted a goal for Jobby Justin. The derby would be always special for Jobby Justin as he registered a world class goal with a side volley. Jobby has scored 5 goals in the I-League so far making him the second highest scorer of I-League this season. Azharuddin Mallick of Mohun Bagan continued to shine against East Bengal & scored the early goal, but couldn’t save his team from defeat.
Clinical Colado :
There was much hype within the East Bengal supporters after the arrival of Jaime Santos Colado. The 23 years old Spaniard marked his debut with a decent game in the Kolkata derby. Colado combined well with Jobby & helped him to expose the Bagan defence. His first touch was too good, he interchanged the position with Brandon & moved left while needed. Mohun Bagan defenders actually couldn’t understand his playing style & failed to cope with him. It seems Colado will flourish more in the next games.
Tactical Masterclass :
There was much controversy within East Bengal among the reporters for the closed door practice and Menendez’s stretegy executed by the players in the ground. Menendez opted the long ball theory which actually worked well in exposing Mohun Bagan defence. On the other hand, Shankarlal’s changes actually brought Bagan into game but that proved too late. Faiyaz’s inclusion changed the whole scenario. Faiyaz was actually on fire & he exposed the East Bengal defence. For that Mohun Bagan earned the 2nd goal.
Controversial Refereering :
The match will be remembered for the controversial refereering. Laldanmawia Ralte converted a chance from a through ball given by Jobby Justin. Mohun Bagan officials alleged it was an offside which R. Venkatesh had given goal. In the 2nd half, ball hit Borja Perez’s hand during clearing the ball. Referee didn’t give the penalty in favour of Mohun Bagan. Although referee can be given the benefit of doubt in both occasions.
Hostile Crowd :
One of the fierecest derbies going on & the spectators won’t be there, it’s impossible. East Bengal released 65k ticket & more than 64k attended the game. The fever of the Kolkata derby never fades and it proves everytime why it’s the biggest match in Indian football.
