After leading the three lions to the World Cup semi-finals in the summer and now spearheading them to the Nations League finals, Gareth Southgate has now risen as a shocking candidate for the Manchester United job.
Manchester United are all set to appoint a new manager in the summer with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as an interim manager following the sacking of the special one Jose Mourinho last month.
Although the current Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino remains as Manchester United’s primary target to take over the job from Solskjaer but United are concerned that he might remain at Tottenham.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is quite tenacious in keeping the Argentine in North London for the first new season at their new stadium leaving United in considering the other alternatives despite their keenness to break the bank to fetch Pochettino.
According to Telegraph, the current England boss Gareth Southgate has been added to the shortlist of potential candidates to be the next Red Devils manager. Gareth Southgate had his fair share of the managerial experience in the Premier League during his time at Middlesbrough.
Although Southgate signed a new contract after a successful stint at the World Cup in the summer with the football association in October which will keep him in charge till 2023 as the England boss but Southgate could be tempted by the interests from the Old Trafford despite having just one club managerial role.
In spite of the fact that plundering a national team’s manager would be somewhat awkward for the Red Devils but Southgate remains as an alluring prospect at Old Trafford.
The former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane was also linked to the job earlier this season much prior to the Jose Mourinho’s dismissal in December.
Solskjaer is felt to be the most likely candidate to be benefitted after his impressive start to his managerial stint at United should Pochettino turn United down, but Gareth Southgate is now in the frame.
