Minerva Punjab are having a tough time in I-League this season and the focus of Ranjit Bajaj & Co. is now on the AFC Competitions. The defending I-League champions roped in Al-Amna and Juan Barraso before the continental competitions and was also reported to have signed striker Cornelius Stewart which we also reported.
But according to our sources, the Vincentinian international in all probability is not joining Minerva Punjab. Stewart was in prolific form in the Dhivehi league in Maldives scoring 40+ goals in last two seasons and was thought to be the solution for Minerva’s lack of finishing before the opponent goal-mouth this season. But the player is now reluctant to join the Punjabi outfit inspite of doing the initial paperworks.
Stewart has shown the reason of an injury for which he will not be able to play. He has also sent his medical reports to the Minerva management. We contacted Stewart, although he initially was reluctant to make any statement on this issue but said, “Yes I have an injury. I got into a crash which led to this”. Besides the player has probably also changed his mind after coming to know about the amateurish treatment some foreign players have received in the past from the club management. Now the player is looking forward to the arrival of the ITC.
The non-arrival of Cornelius Stewart is a big blow to the defending champions especially few days ahead of the AFC Champions League qualifiers. Minerva is looking for two attacking options now.
