It was a disappointing 3-1 loss for ATK as this loss meant that they wouldn’t be making it into the playoffs of this season’s ISL. It was the hattrick by Modou Sougou who found his scoring boots after
two months of goal drought that sank ATK’s ship. Although ATK did manage to pull one back through Andre Bikey but it was more of consolation of a goal. Steve Coppell made his presence in the post-match press conference, let’s have a look at some of the things said by him.
Coppell expressed his views of the game. He said, “I am very disappointed, It has been a difficult week for us to prepare for the game due to the injuries. With Lanzarote suffering a calf injury and Edu unable to train the entire week due to his groin injury. It is quite disappointing that you can never really know what Mumbai are going to do with the pace and power down the wing and providing crosses for Sougou to finish and we just couldn’t handle it very well. After being three goals down we did manage to pull one back and if we had a couple of more opportunities it would have been an interesting last few minutes for us.”
About the positives from the game and this season. He said, “It is a wrong time to talk about the positives on the back of a defeat at home. We have some really good players I hope all of them use this experience to push forward to next season But it is going to be more difficult with the possibility and probability of more teams to be involved in ISL.”
After the final whistle, there were plenty of fans shouting, “Go Back Coppell”. When questioned about this incident. He said, “It is the manager who is always responsible for the results. I fully understand that kind of action. If that’s what people think I can’t really control that. I will sleep well tonight because I had given my very best to try to get this team good results on game by game basis. Even now looking back at the preparation for the game I wouldn’t have changed anything that we did. We did what we are capable of doing but our performance wasn’t good enough for sure and if it’s my fault then it’s my fault.”
When asked about his plans for the next season. He said, “The season is not over yet and there is plenty of football left with super cup coming up and we have to prepare for the next game. It is a big game for us because we would like to finish by winning the home game if possible.”
