A few days ago rumours were on that FC Pune City forward Ashique Kuruniyan is all set to land up at Quess East Bengal FC for the upcoming season of I- League as a replacement of Jobby Justin. But it seemed to have turned odd as the Keralite himself confirmed Talk Sports 24×7 that “It’s not true as I am staying here at Pune”.
Ashique made it to the headlines when he joined Villareal C at the age of nineteen on a loan spell from Pune City FC. The Mallapuram based boy started from the Vision Academy of Kerala Football Association and joined the Pune Academy in 2014. Later this academy was converted to the Pune City FC academy where from Kuruniyan started his professional career as he signed with the Pune based ISL franchise. After the training stint in Spain, Ashique came back to India and made his professional debut for Pune in the 2017 ISL.
Out of his seventeen club appearances Ashique has scored twice. He has represented India in the U 20 level and debuted for the senior team in the Intercontinental Cup last season under Stephen Constantine. The 21 year old is capable of playing in both wings and is also a double-footed player making himself a rare blend in Indian football.
On the other hand East Bengal is in deep search of a new Indian to fulfil the void in their attacking third which came up after Jobby’s departure. Discusions were on in the Indian football circuit that Spanish coach Alejandro Menendez Garcia desperately wants a young talented Indian brigade for the upcoming season of I-League, as it is believed that Garcia likes to create heroes in football out of noble talented youths as he made Jobby-Brandon-Chullova. Thus Ashique was thought to be the next young card yet to transform wild at East Bengal.
