DPR Korea is one of the high profile teams among the invitees of Intercontinental Cup 2019 which is set to start today in Ahmedabad. They have qualified for two World Cups most recently in 2010. After a recent fall at international circuit they would be eager to bring forth major winning mojo in the upcoming competition prior to the crucial World cup qualifier. Here we have picked five such players from the DPR Korea side who will be crucial to the Korean aspirations of lifting the trophy.
● Ri Myong-guk :
The 32 year old veteran goalkeeper is also the national team captain and has been an integral part of the North Korean setup since his debut with more than 100 caps to his name which makes him the most capped player of his country. He is lean, light and quick on his feet. With rare achievement of being the only keeper to play FIFA World Cup among the Intercontinental Cup invitees, Ri Myong-guk would be looking to defy his golden standard and inspire Chollima
outfit to the Intercontinental Cup glory.
● Pak Kwang-Ryong :
Pak kwang-Ryong became the first North Korean footballer to play in UEFA Champions League on his 19th birthday. Having spent majority of his career in Switzerland, most notably in FC Basel and presently for Austrian outfit SKN St. Pölten, he is an experienced customer. The 26 year old has clear eye for the goal, having scored 13 goals in 34 appearences. He would be looking to lead forward line and add some goals to his tally this week to do justice with his profile.
● Jong Il-gwan :
Another high profile striker of Chollima outfit plays for FC Wil currently on loan from FC Luzern in Switzerland. He is known for his physical forward play on the left side with heavy input of work rate and impetus and clinical finishing . Having come to
prominence after scoring hattrick against Australia in U-19 Asian cup final he was also awarded AFC Youth Player of the Year later. Jong haw scored 23 goals in 63 appearence for the national outfit. He is definetly a player to watchout.
● Ri Yong-jik :
Positioned as defensive midfielders, Ri is an overseas born player, born and graduated in Osaka. He currently plies his trade for Tokyo Verdy in Second tier of J-League. He is remarkably known for his build up and distribution play towards high forward line and marshalling midfield notably known for keeping hold of the ball. His experience would be much needed in the midfield.
● Kim Yu Song :
The 22-year-old made headlines after scoring five goals in a 6–0 victory over Mongolian side Erchim FC. Heis yet another striker from North Korea who can dent opponent defences. He is one of the familiar names among Indian football fraternity as he has already played on Indian soil in 2017 season for April 25 SC against Bengaluru FC in AFC Cup. He is remarkably known for scoring goals through his heading ability.
