The 129th edition of the prestigious Durand Cup kicked off with the Kolkata Giants battling and Mohun Bagan AC edging past their city rivals Mohammedan SC by 2-0 courtesy to a brace from their Spanish forward Salva Chamorro in a rainy Salt Lake Stadium packed by 28315 people.
TalkSports 24×7 analyses the whole game and marks the 5 most important talking points of the game.
1) Salva Chamorro- The Perfect Man for Bagan:
Salvador Perez Martinez scored twice in the first half for the Mariners to earn all possible points in the exciting opener of the 129th edition of the prestigious Durand Cup. He opened the scoring as early as the second minute, heading the ball into the net from Joseba Beitia’s spot kick. Chamorro doubled his tally on the 21st minute, again heading in the ball from Ashutosh Mehta’s cross from the right flank. Bagan coach Jose Antonio Vicuna would be happy with his forward’s performance and depend on his performance in the future matches.
2) Unprofessional approach of Mohammedan SC towards the game :
The Black Panthers gaffer Subrata Bhattacharya did not bother to attend either the pre-match or the post-match conferences. He was noticed mostly inactive in the players’ box during the duration of the game as well.
Both the goals for Bagan came in from crosses from the right flank. Conceding twice from the same spot, Mohammedan coach Subrata Bhattacharya brought in right back Asif Ali Molla in place of Hira and shifted Kamran Farooque to the left back position.
While asked about the same during the post-match conference, Mohammedan SC team manager Belal Khan handled the matter quite unprofessionally and commented “It is not possible for the coach to attend the post-match conference so early after the final whistle.” Mohammedan after conceding twice so early could not cope up with the pace of the game for the rest of the match.
3) Joseba Beitia- Midfield General for the Mariners:
The Spanish footballer played a deep-lying midfielder’s role in Bagan midfield against the Black Panthers. His abilities of ball control and distribution were critical for his team. He was fouled by Sattyam Sharma on the first minute and assisted Salva Chamorro from the following free kick to give Mohun Bagan the edge in the beginning. He also fed the ball during the second goal came in from Ashutosh Mehta’s pass from the right flank. He will be the main man to watch out for in Bagan’s upcoming matches.
4) Bagan’s foreign line up as a unit played amazingly well:
Starting from Fran Morante in the defence, Joseba Beitia in the midfield and Salva Chamorro upwards, Bagan’s Spanish footballers played as an unit and focused on teamwork more than individual football; on the other hand the Black Panthers’ foreign unit focused on individual showcasing of the game. All of Bagan’s foreigners being Spanish can showcase the same genre of football as the coach’s strategy. This will be crucial to watch out for in their upcoming matches.
5) Difference in strategy of Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan:
The Mariners’ Spanish coach Jose Antonio Vicuna concentrates on passing football and ball possession. Building up from the defence helped them pretty well in their opening match, while Mohammedan coach Subrata Bhattacharya focused on defensive and counter attacking football. Bagan coach would still be looking forward to improve the complete game play of his team. He commented during the post-match conference “We have to improve everything- techniques, tactics and physique. We played the ball pretty well in the ground and will have to focus on that in future.”
Mohun Bagan will next face Indian Super League side ATK at their home- Mohun Bagan Ground on 8th August, while Mohammedan SC will face Indian Navy at the same ground, a couple of days later.
