East Bengal Club have officially signed 33 years old Spanish striker; former Mallorca, Tarragona and Kitchee forward Marcos Jimenez De la Espada as their 5th foreign player for the season. The player is scheduled to arrive at Kolkata today.

First Impression :

After successful stints at La Salle & San Francisco academies, Marcos made his professional debut for Tercera division  Spanish side Esportiu Constància. He had an impressive debut season by scoring 18 goals in 33 games which actually earned him the move to the reserve team of Spanish giant RCD Mallorca.

Disappearance & Resurgence  :

He didn’t get many chances at RCD Mallorca & moved to Sant Andreau where he stayed for 3 seasons & scored 14 goals in 45 games. He was loaned to Orihuela for a season.
After the Sant Andreau stint, he joined Sporting Mahonés for new challenge but didn’t have a decent season there. He just scored 8 goals in 34 games. But later that year, he joined his old club Sant Andreau that season became the turning point of his career. He scored 14 goals in just 23 games which actually earned a call up for Gimnastica Tarragona.

Life at Tarragona & Asia :

Marcos played at Gimnastica Tarragona for 4 years. He started with a bang in the new club by scoring 16 goals un his debut season & placed the club sixth in Segunda B. He scored 34 goals in his 124 games for Tarragona. After the Tarragona stint, Marcos tried his luck at Asian circuit by joining Hong Kong champions Kitchee. But he failed to shine there. He absolutely turned into beast after joining Southern club of Hong Kong. He scored 22 goals in just 28 games. He became the joint 2nd top scorer in 2017-18 season by scoring 13 goals. He joined Atletico Baleres later on but he decided to come to India for a new challenge in a new season.

New Challenge in East Bengal :

If we talk about certain qualities of 33 years old Marcos de la Espada, we can say he is a perfect poacher, has great finishing ability. His heading prowess is quite good, foxy with his movement & agility too. His record of scoring goals in lower divisions of Spain & in Asia will surely give confidence to the East Bengal fans. The striking line of East Bengal, with the names of Marcos, Colado, Bidyashagar, Oliveira looks much stronger. Marcos has vast experience in playing both in lower divisions of Spain & in Asia which would help him to acclimatise with the Indian climate too.

Recruiting Process of Espada :

After the departure of Enrique Esqueda, East Bengal badly needed a striker & the officials had given green light to Menendez for searching new foreign players. From his instagtam stories, we can claim that Alejandro Menendez & former assistant coach, Carlos Nodar visited many Segunda division games & suggested various names to the officials. Menendez have seen several games of Atletico Baleres & perfectly scrutinised performance of Marcos & suggested his name to officials. And East Bengal finally signed Marcos De la Espada as the 5th foreign player of the team. Espada will land Kolkata on 18th August, Sunday. It is imminent that Marcos De la Espada will feature in few CFL games. East Bengal won’t get Marcos in the knockout games of Durand Cup as the registration period is over. But after Durga Puja, East Bengal club will travel to Bangladesh to play in the prestigious Sheikh Kamal International Trophy for the 2nd time. That will be a challenge for Marcos & obviously a treat for East Bengal fans to watch him playing.
