With the nation’s premier football competition commencing soon, let us see the best foreign recruits of this season. As the season is inching closer, the clubs have geared up by strengthening the core to the best of their abilities.
Let us now see which foreign arrivals may mark a difference in the clubs’ status this season.
Asamoah Gyan (NorthEast United):
The John Abraham co-owned ISL franchise which represents eight North-Eastern states of India has been able to sign in arguably the most prominent foreign player of ISL this season to their side. The Highlanders surprised the Indian football community with the signing of Ghanaian star Asamoah Gyan.
The 33 year old centre forward has an experience of playing in top three European leagues. Gyan has represented Ghana in three FIFA World Cups (2006,2010, and 2014), scoring six goals and becoming the top African scorer in the tournament in the process. Gyan also has 51 international goals to his name.
Roy Krishna (ATK):
In the history of ATK, signing of Roy Krishna is significantly the most intent one in terms of leaving behind the demoralizing performances of last season by the franchise.
Roy is the captain of Fiji National team as well as the winner of A-League 2018-19 golden boot for Wellington Phoenix with 18 goals. He represented Fiji in the 2018 Rio Olympics in Brazil and even scored in a group C match against Mexico. Roy Krishna will be a huge boost for ATK who struggled to convert chances last season. The Fijian goal machine is surely one of the most prominent names of ISL this season, someone who has joined an Indian side at the peak of his career. His combination with David Williams will be something to look forward to and it will be interesting to see how Antonio Habas utilizes his multiple attacking options this time.
Diawandou Diagne (Odisha FC):
The signing of the Senegalese international Diawandou Diagne from Belgian club KAS Eupen will strengthen the midfield of the newcomers of ISL Odisha FC as it got rebranded from Delhi Dynamos to it’s current self in August, 2019.
Diagne was on the books of the Blaugrana in the 2014-15 season when he made over 20 appearances for Barcelona’s B-team.
Defensive midfield is his best position, though he operated in central midfield and attacking midfield sparingly, having represented U-17 and U-20 teams for Senegal. He made his debut for senior team in 2014.
Carl McHugh (ATK):
The former Motherwell FC captain Carl McHugh has been signed by ATK on a two year deal which will keep him at the club till 2021.
The Irishman comes with an experience of having played in England where he was a part of the Bradford setup. He has been a versatile player and his contributions will definitely be the key to ATK’s success. McHugh’s primary position is center back but has played as left back and in defensive midfield occasionally throughout his career.
Manuel Onwu (Bengaluru FC) :
Bengaluru FC having an influence of Spanish players owing to the fact that their head coach comes with the same nationality, has signed Manuel Onwu as their 13th Spanish player. Manuel has played for UCAM Murcia CF, who contest in the second tier of Spanish football league system.
Manuel has been bought as a direct replacement for Miku who played a pivotal role in Bengaluru FC’s successful season last term.
Though the tournament will surely come up with many more foreigners showing their skills and composure and proving their worth for the teams, Indian football fans should surely keep an eye on these five names as they are expected to shine bright in the upcoming season of Indian Super League.
