Mohun Bagan is set to start their campaign in the third edition of Sheikh Kamal International Cup today against Young Elephants, a Laotian club.
Initially it was expected by the organizers that all three Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan, East Bengal and Mohammedan SC would be playing in this tournament but suddenly last month East Bengal declared they have withdrawn their name from the tournament. In their absence I-League winners Chennai City FC were proposed they gave the nod to join the tournament. However Mohammedan SC tranquilized to pick off their name too earlier this month as they are going to take a part in Sikkim Gold Cup. When all things were set for the tournament, Dhaka Abahani withdrew their name a few days ago and this opened a passage for Durand Cup champions Gokulam Kerala FC to enter in this tournament.
Along with three Indian clubs, there are
two Bangladeshi clubs Basundhara Kings and host of the tournament Chittagong Abahani, Malaysian club Terengganu FC, Maldivian Premier League champions and current champion of the tournament T.C. Sports club and Laotian club Young Elephants.
Kibu Vicuña and co. have already arrived on Thursday in Bangladesh and they are practising at ‘Bandar Stadium’ as they will take on Young Elephants on Sunday. Mohun Bagan thinktank Kibu Vicuña is contented with the practice ground and facilities they were provided. It’s clear that Mohun Bagan is considering this tournament as a preparation of I-League as the Bagan coach said, “We have come to make a good result in this tournament. We want to exploit this tournament as preparation of I-League”.
