Kolkata giants Mohammedan SC are set to commence their first match of the 39th edition of the Sikkim Gold Cup against Army Red at Paljor Stadium, Gangtok today.

The 2019 Sikkim Gold Cup began from November 1st with 12 teams and will end on 12th November. Notably two other teams from I-League and ISL also sent their reserve squads to take part in this cup for the preparation of second division I-League in the form of Gokulam Kerala and Jamshedpur FC. The Malabarian’s reserve team already have made two trophies in their name this season. On the other hand Mohammedan SC and other teams will fight with their full strength on the ground.

The pre-quarter final round has already been played between with eight teams and four of them having qualified for the quarter final round. Four teams including Mohammedan SC, Jamshedpur Fc(R),Gokulam Kerala(R) and Punjab Police A.C. are already qualified for the quarter final round as total eight teams are locking horns with each other from 5th November.

Meanwhile Mohammedan SC already landed on Jalpaiguri and reached Gangtok on Wednesday. They had their first training session yesterday at Paljor stadium which is not unknown for them as they won their second Sikkim Gold Cup after long wait in this stadium. However their Nigerian coach Saheed Ramon is not overconfident as he said, “It’s true that our record in the Governor’s Gold Cup is very good but tomorrow is the beginning of a new tournament and everybody is serious to put up a good show. I know the expectations are very high and we will think nothing less than a win when we hit the pitch tomorrow”. He took the charge after Subrata Bhattacharya had been released by the club in the middle of Calcutta Premier League after a draw against Southern Samity and guided the club to the fourth position of the table but he wanted to think this tournament as a new journey.

The Nigerian said, “A knockout competition is always different from the league. Any small mistake can end your path in the tournament so we will have to be at our best if we are to progress through to the next round”.
