East Bengal’s chase for Joe Garner gets complex as new Cypriot challenge arrives
The Kolkata derby ended in disappointment for SC East Bengal as they were beaten 2-0 by ATK Mohun Bagan in their debut match in the Indian Super League. The game made it clear that Fowler badly needs a ‘target man’ upfront to address the goal-scoring issues of his side.
In search of a potent striker, the Liverpool legend came across Wigan man Joe Garner who is a well known face in British football. The former Rangers striker who has played for multiple clubs in England is currently the top scorer for Wigan and Fowler is keen to have him in his setup.
The talks went accordingly and Garner was all set to fly for India to join East Bengal having terminated the contract with Wigan when another offer has come for the former England U19 team striker. The offer is from Cypriot giants APOEL FC. APOEL is the most successful football club in Cyprus and regularly features in competitions like the UCL and UEL.
APOEL is currently being managed by former Rep. of Ireland Manager Mick Mccarthy under whom once Joe Garner played in Ipswich where he netted 10 times in 32 outings in the league. Mccarthy is keen to reunite with his former disciple and it will be a tough decision for Garner to make.
The two horse race for the Blackburn born striker is seemingly heating up as East Bengal fans are waiting for the arrival of Garner and APOEL is also not in a giving mood.
Now it remains to be seen which one between the opportunity to play under boyhood hero Fowler or the possibility of a reunion with former Coach allures Joe Garner!
